Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
