Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
