Not each spooky season experience must terrify gamers. Including beloved classics such as mystery-solving cartoons to endearing shows like Over the Garden Wall, numerous Halloween-themed titles offer entertainment without increasing anxiety. Moreover, a growing library of eerie-charming releases including autumn atmosphere, but not the sleep-with-the-lights-on degree of horror. Gloomy Eyes arrived in the fall, and stands as an outstanding comfortable alternative to the truly terrifying titles of 2025.
Described as a single-player cooperative brain-teaser, Gloomy Eyes unites a living-impaired child called Gloomy and a mortal child named Nena as they start an mission to return daylight to their dark, dark world. Their design is similar to collectible figures combined with the puppets from a stop-motion animation. Their light-complected and heavy-lidded appearance borrows heavily from the appearance of Tim Burton’s films, and the story is a quintessential all-ages journey. These two builds an unbreakable bond over the course of the game’s 14 chapters as Nena attempts to show to her priest uncle that, you know, possibly zombies are actually good.
This unique label originates from the game’s interactive problem-solving. After Gloomy and Nena cross paths, you’ll swap between the recent allies to overcome obstacles and move forward through the areas. As an undead, Gloomy cannot pass through the illumination of a light source, while Nena can be captured by loitering creatures unless a light is directed on them.
They have to cooperate closely — actually, gamers operate them together — to advance through areas. Nena could adjust or temporarily shut off illumination to open routes for Gloomy, while the intellectually curious youth will use his zombie strength to move items in the environment, creating paths for Nena.
These challenges bring to mind a little of The Gardens Between, in the fashion the areas are floating, miniature designs that the view pans around in sync with your protagonists. Gloomy Eyes’ worlds are highly entertaining, taking the duo around a fair and through a ghostly building, amid other places. The game includes a “diorama view” button that enables you to zoom out and spin the areas, both to enjoy the designs and look for routes that may not have been clear.
This represents one of the only hiccups with Gloomy Eyes. Like other releases with a static view, occasionally it's confusing where the protagonists can and cannot go. You may need to just bump into a several various objects to figure out which ones are interactable, as it’s not always intuitive.
Nevertheless, those slight challenges don't obstruct of a spooky-cute enjoyable experience. Gloomy Eyes has a compact length, with approximately three to five hours worth of challenges. Subsequent stages combine minor stealth and dynamic sequences with the puzzle solving, as Gloomy Eyes progresses to a satisfying — and somewhat unexpected — ending.
Players steering clear of the scares of terrifying games should definitely try Gloomy Eyes. You can find it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox, and is currently on sale for 25% off on digital platforms.
This charming title is available on multiple platforms and delivers a delightful option for fans in search of autumn enjoyment without the fear factor.
