The Trump phenomenon's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater too.
The evident and direct truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?
The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it represents both humility and faith, a mixture that genuine US believers ought to accept.
