The UK and US have forged a landmark bilateral deal that will maintain no tariffs on British drug shipments being sold in the US market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost funding on drugs through the public health system. This pledge secures that tariffs on these crucial products will stay at zero for a period of three years.

This deal comes after earlier warnings to hike duties on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures floated up to 100%.

"This agreement between the Britain reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and introduces long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a release declared.

Commercial Significance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the the United Kingdom's largest goods shipped to the United States, which is easily the primary buyer for leading UK drugmakers.

Export figures show that in the year to the end of September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products worth billions to the US. This figure accounted for 17.4% of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This deal secures work, stimulates capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key British Pledges

The deal includes several key pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it judges new medicines to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

This agreement takes place against a long-running row between the sector and the ministers over drug pricing and regulatory access.

These tensions were exacerbated by claims that American consumers were paying significantly more for the identical medicines than people in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its overall budget over the past decade.
